Finished The Kitchen Island

Just wanted to add an update to the last blog. I finished the kitchen island hubby made. Here is a photo of it. In the background you can see my next project. I am painting my kitchen cabinets black and then I will add burgundy to them, distress it so you can see the black through top coat of burgundy.

Kitchen Island Tutorial

Hubby made me a new kitchen island. The one I had was a little too big and this one was built to the size we needed and has more character. I started out by buying a antique mid section of a rolling pin shelf at a auction. You should have seen hubby's face when it wobbled as I sat it on the counter in front of him. I said isn't this nice! He just shook his head.... but I could see the possibilities.  I drew a photo of what I wanted. It was a mixture of several tables and islands I had seen online all put together. First he built a frame to attach this wobbly rolling pin thing to. He added the top which is two separate boards we bought at Menard's. Next we cut two of the shelves out of the rolling pin section. I wanted to have a couple of places I could sit something other than rolling pins. We used these shelves to make sides for the lower section that is attached to the kitchen island. Last we made a bottom for all this to sit on and give the island stability so it would not tip over from the weight of the top. This is how it turned out. I hope you like it. I still need to paint and stain it,but I will get to that as soon as I can. I have had eye surgery and I am not supposed to lift or bend yet. I can't wait to finish it.

Dinning Room Table

Well hubby has been up to new ideas again. We bought several old sewing machine bottoms with the intention of making small side tables out of them. Hubby got an idea of using two of them for a dinning room table. Here is a photo of the table, it is not finished yet. I still need to paint the bottoms and stain the top.  I love it very much, but I love everything he makes. It is very hard for me to sell what he makes but I can't keep it all.
Most of the ideas I throw at him and we come up with as we make it. Sometimes we have loud discussions with each other when we both have an idea we both want done to our project, but we smile in the end at what we end up with. We both love doing these projects together!
I wish we could do classes for all of you that want them but I am sure you all live too far away. Anytime you have a question send me an e-mail and I will try to answer it for you. I can't wait to get these projects done to post the finished tables. I am always so proud of him. We will be selling the table after his sister comes in from NY. After I post the furniture he makes it is gone within the week! He said he doesn't have time to make another for our dinning room before she gets here.
I hoped to get both done before this week was up but I won't. I am having my eye surgery Thursday morning to remove a cataract from my right eye and the left one will get done after my sister-in-law comes in April. I may not be on here till early next week, Depends on how I feel so don't worry if you don't hear from me for a few days.
